Frozen tax thresholds and a major pension rule change from April 2027 mean more families than ever will be affected. Find out where you stand — free, in 1 minute.
Thresholds have been frozen for years while property and pension values keep rising — pulling many more families into paying a tax that, until recently, only affected the very wealthiest estates.
The proportion of UK estates paying Inheritance Tax is set to double by 2030. Today in 2026, around 1 in 20 estates pay IHT. With thresholds frozen until 2031 and pensions coming into scope from 2027, the Government’s own forecaster (the OBR) expects that to reach 1 in 10 — pushing annual IHT receipts to around £15 billion a year.
